Mt. Washington Village is a quaint little town center just off of Falls Road, about 15 minutes away from Loyola’s campus. It’s a small community center that is chock-full of shops and restaurants and looks as if it was made for a Sunday afternoon stroll with some friends. When you’re tired of exploring the area, there are a multitude of places to stop in and grab something to eat. One of these places is Crêpe du Jour.
Crêpe du Jour is a gem of a restaurant with a small unassuming street front. It’s located on Sulgrave Avenue in the very center of the village and is the perfect place to stop in for a great dining experience. A family-owned-and-operated French Bistro, it specializes in crêpes, but serves a variety of French specialties. The menu has classics such as boeuf bourguignon and coq au vin, but also creative daily specials that vary depending on the available seasonal ingredients. The meats are cooked to perfection and the sauces are rich with flavor, providing customers with the best possible experience.
Because crêpes are their specialty, they have a huge variety to choose from. They have the typical selections of sweet crêpes with fruit and sugary sauces, and yes, the beloved Nutella. More interesting though, is their selection of savory crêpes. Crêpes with meat, seafood and rich savory sauces; crêpes that are unusual for the typical American’s taste buds. The quality of the crêpes is exceptional and just as important as the typical French classics that are provided for the less adventurous eaters.
The restaurant itself is small, but well-lit and has a very homey feel. Sitting outside on the terrace in the summer has even been compared to spending a summer’s evening in Paris. Soft music plays in the background to accompany the sincere conversations that good food and good wine induce. However, because the restaurant is on the smaller side it can become crowded quickly, making a reservation or going during off-hours is the best way to secure a table.
The service is fantastic. The workers are very conversational and courteous, making sure all patrons are served quickly and the food quality is at its finest. The owner is often present, which is rare in today’s dining experience, and he interacts with the customers, introducing himself and ensuring their dining experience is satisfactory.
Because the fare is so fresh and prepared daily, the prices are a little higher than usual casual dining, one can expect to spend from $20 to $30 depending on the meal selection. Though the price may be on the higher end, it is well worth the cost. It has been Zagat-rated since 2003 and continues to make customers happy with every dining experience.
